How Is Ideal Body Weight Calculated?
There is no single "perfect" formula for ideal body weight. Our calculator uses four well-established formulas, each developed by medical researchers. All formulas use height and gender as primary inputs.
The Formulas
Devine Formula (1974):
Male: 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches - 60)
Female: 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches - 60)
Robinson Formula (1983):
Male: 52 + 1.9 × (height in inches - 60)
Female: 49 + 1.7 × (height in inches - 60)
Miller Formula (1983):
Male: 56.2 + 1.41 × (height in inches - 60)
Female: 53.1 + 1.36 × (height in inches - 60)
Hamwi Formula (1964):
Male: 48 + 2.7 × (height in inches - 60)
Female: 45.5 + 2.2 × (height in inches - 60)
