About the U.S. Navy Body Fat Method

The U.S. Navy method estimates body fat percentage from simple circumference measurements. For men, it uses waist and neck measurements. For women, it additionally requires hip measurement. Studies show it is accurate to within 1-3% of more expensive methods like DEXA scans.

How to Measure

  • Waist: Measure around your waist at navel level, relaxed (don't suck in)
  • Neck: Measure just below your larynx (Adam's apple), looking straight ahead
  • Hips (women only): Measure at the widest point of your hips/buttocks

Pair this with your BMI and ideal body weight for a complete picture of your body composition.
